Holiday Travel Tips

Do you have holiday travel plans this year? Travel can be incredibly rough for arthritis, particularly when heading to a different climate. Here we have compiled six tips for traveling with arthritis. We encourage you to take a look at these hints and see how they might be able to work into your travel plans. Even on the road, keeping as much of a routine as possible is incredibly important. These tips will help you stay in control of your situation and should make the overall experience more enjoyable and less painful. After all, it’s the holidays – you deserve it!

Make dietary plans ahead of time

Those of you that follow our blog here know how much emphasis we put on eating a healthy diet that is high in Omega-3 fatty acids. When it comes to reducing joint pain and inflammation, Omega-3s are among the most important parts of a diet for arthritis.

Unfortunately, holiday travel doesn’t always lend itself to healthy eating. If you’re not the one doing the cooking, it often doesn’t even offer much menu control.

As much as possible, try to incorporate healthy olive oils and foods that are high in Omega-3s into your meals when traveling. Peruse those restaurant menus, and keep snacks with you. Maybe opt for the Salmon instead of the pork, and eat as many fresh veggies as you can.

If your Thanksgiving or holiday meal is set up as a buffet, use this freedom to be selective to your advantage. Load up on fresh foods and healthy fats, and try to avoid eating too many carbs and processed meats.

Be sure to pack any medications and supplements

This should seem like common sense, but if you’re anything like us you’ve been known to forgot those supplements on a trip now and then. Include and medications and supplements in your packing routine, and double check the morning of departure to make sure you have them all.

If you’re looking to save some space, our supplement GLX3 can be a great choice because of the high levels of Omega-3s and anti-inflammatory properties. Containing all natural New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel Oil, New Zealand Olive Oil, and Vitamin E oil, the supplement is perfect for fighting arthritis on the road.

Know your health insurance (and carry a record!)

What happens if the trip lasts a day or two longer than planned, or if something unexpected occurs and you run out of medication? It’s always good to have your medical record with you just in case. Always have your health insurance information readily available as well, which is easy to do in today’s high-tech world.

If you’re traveling internationally, it is helpful to know what your insurance will and won’t cover. We suggest giving your doctor a call and letting him or her know about your plans. You may get a piece of advice that would have eluded you otherwise!

Travel light

Even those without arthritis don’t want to be stuck carrying a heavy suitcase or carry-on with them. For those of us with joint pain and inflammation, the last thing we want to do is strain our joints any more than necessary.

If you’ll have access to laundry services on your trip, consider packing a little lighter than normal. Who needs that extra outfit anyway?

When it comes to gift giving, things like gift cards and online subscription services can do wonders. It’ll save you having to lug big boxes around, as well as the hassle of wrapping! These days, more people are valuing experiences over physical possessions. By rethinking your gift-giving strategy, you can knock two birds with one stone: make them happier, and lighten your load a bit while you’re at it!

Be Active

In previous blog posts, we’ve talked extensively about stretches for arthritis and exercises for arthritis . We recommend printing these articles out and bringing them with you as you travel.

Being active and stretching can do wonders for keeping arthritis pain at a minimum while on the road. Traveling presents its own set of stresses and anxiety, it is important to do everything you can to keep control of your situation as much as possible.

Take care of your joints

The feet and ankles can take quite a pounding as you move throughout airports and such. Be sure to pack good, strong shoes that support your ankles and aren’t flimsy. For cold weather destinations, a nice warm pair of gloves can help save the wrists and fingers from extra popping due to frigid temperatures, particularly when heading out in the evening or early morning.

Staying on top of your routine

Spending the holidays with friends and family is a joyous occasion. However, it is important not to forget about yourself in the process. Take time each day to make sure your bases are covered as far as what you can do to minimize arthritis pain and discomfort. If that means waking up a few minutes earlier in the morning to have some alone time to get ready, the effort will be more than worth it.

Your ultimate reward will come after returning back home. After having a few days to rest recoup, you can think back to the trip and know that you actionably stayed on top of your situation. Knowing this can be as fulfilling as the experiences of the trip themselves – almost, at least.
